Is my baby too old for a newborn photoshoot?

Is  my baby too old for a newborn photoshoot?  This is a question that I often get asked by new parents.  We can get beautiful photos of your baby at any age although if you want the typical posed newborn images then it is best to book in for your photoshoot in the first few weeks

1 – 5 weeks:  The earlier the better, if baby is approaching 5 weeks then there is more chance that baby will be awake for some of the newborn  photoshoot. This is a good opportunity so get some gorgeous eye open images of your baby and some casual lifestyle photos with parents and siblings.  Newborns are sleepier in the first few weeks which makes it easier to pose them and they are still very flexible.  This allows for the typical newborn poses either with or without the use of props depending on what your preference is.

6 weeks – 5 months:  You baby will probably be awake for most or all of a photoshoot especially if they are closer to the 5 month mark.  I love the natural look that we can get at this stage,  including parents helps get a nice assortment of images.  If baby is approaching 5 months then you may prefer to wait a little longer until baby is sitting as then we can get a lot more variety in the images and also incorporate some props unless you prefer a natural sort of look.

6 – 11 months:  This is my favourite time for baby photos after the newborn period!  They are generally happy and smiley and usually not very mobile at this point with chubby thighs and arm rolls!  Lots of parents miss out on this extra cute period as they tend to wait for the first birthday stage.  This is also a easy period for portraits before they get too mobile.

11 – 12 months:  At this point baby will be a lot more mobile, crawling, standing up holding onto furniture or possibly walking on their own.  This is a good time for a first birthday session or even  a cake smash photoshoot, using a cake is a good way to help keep them still as they are usually full of energy and constantly on the move!  After the cake  we follow with a bubble  bath  to wash away the cake which they usually love, they often prefer the bath to the actual cake.  You could either bring along your own cake or I could order one from a local baker, some people think that its a waste of  cake but you always get to take the cake home with you after the photoshoot as even if babies love cake they generally only pick at the icing!

I have a large selection of props and outfits that can be used for all of the photoshoots. I also have maternity dresses, body suits and drapes if you are interested in bump to baby photography, Dad and siblings can also be included in these sessions.   You are welcome to bring along your own items of clothing if you prefer but usually people just use my items,  an assortment of underwear in light and dark colours is helpful.
